May 2017

May felt like we did not do a lot but as I look back at the pictures I guess we did more than I thought.  The first weekend in May we took CJ and her friend Millie to the Anderson County Fair.  The Fair was more like a carnival then a Fair.  I was very disappointed all that they had was rides, food, and games.  No 4H tent or exhibits.  Anderson bills itself as a small town yet no crafts, pictures, or animals were at the fair to be judged.  CJ had fun riding the rides until it started to pour down rain.  She still did not what to leave but it was cold and wet.  We let her ride a couple of rides in the rain before we left and took the girls to dinner. We did not have dinner at the fair but Jay did buy them a funnel cake. Millie did not have as much fun as CJ on all the rides, but they both loved the fun house and kept going back into it over and over.  I think as it started to rain it was the only dry place.

Jay a couple of months ago learned about Amateur (Ham) Radio.  He wanted to talk to the space station and become a Ham operation.  He thought that it was neat that when I was younger I had received my operating licences. Jay studied hard and go his operating licences the morning before we wen to the fair.  I do not think that I am interested in renewing my licences.  It was fun when I was a kids but I am just not interested.  Jay hopes that when CJ gets back from camp this summer that she will be interested in getting her licence and broadcasting with him.

That Sunday was or last Hebrew school for the school year.  They kids did activities and then we had a pot luck.  Kym told me that no one was bring a main course so Jay made a very large put of Brunswick Stew.  Rabbi said that Children were not going to like to stew so he went and got pizza for everyone.  Jay and I were very disappointed because we spend to lot of money on the stew and thought that it was a great idea.  After the pot luck we had a lot of Stew left.  I could not believe how any people had never had Brunswick stew. I guess because it it a southern thing and not many people at temple are from the south.  Jay and I just made a pack never to do that again and we ate Brunswick stew for the next week ourselves.

The next Friday we had the 6th grade field trip.  I never get to go on the field trips because I always have to pick CJ up after school and the field trips run late.  This year I did not have to worry about anything because CJ was with me.  They put her and her friend Millie in my group along with several of my students.  This was one of the best field trips.  We went to Medieval times in Georgia.  All I had to do was make sure that my students were all on the bus.  The rest of everything was taken care of by the staff at Medieval times.  The food was not very good but the show was great.  All the students loved it and we had no problems.  I was just able to enjoy spending time with CJ.  I bought her a dragons eye necklace and a flag for a souvenir. We got back even before school got out.  It was nice to just spend the day doing something fun with the kids and not teaching.  CJ loved the show and not being in class learning.

That same weekend was Mother's day.  The only thing that I asked for was that I wanted to go for a motorcycle ride and for a picnic in some park.  We ended up putting about 100 miles on the bike that day.  Jay found a really nice park in Georgia with a campground.  While we were their we checked out the camp ground to see if it was someplace we wanted to camp.  It was not.  The park was beautiful.  Just what I was thinking about when I said that I wanted a picnic in the park.  We had the best day.  We ride relaxed and just enjoyed the warm quiet day.

The next weekend was Jay's first BBQ competition.  It was Pig in the Park right here in Williamston.  Jay was so excited about making his debut.  He did most everything himself.  CJ and I came by after work but Jay had most everything done.  So we just sat, talked, and walked around. Jay's friend got their around 8:00 and helped Jay get the pork ready to go in the cooker.  CJ and I went home and get some sleep.  In the morning, we got up and went to the park to help Jay.  We had a nice day helping Jay set up and CJ went with Jay to turn in his box.  It was all exciting.  In the end we were all very tired from serving, cleaning up, and cooking.  By the time it was for the winners to be announced Jay said that he would be happy if we placed in the top 10 because their were so many great competitors.  When they Called our team name and we had placed 5th we were so surprised and excited.  We had won $250 and received a plak. Jay was so happy and he was a true BBQ champion.

On Tuesday we had a half day at school.  CJ asked if she could get her hair all cut off.  I was so against it, but all I could think was that she was going to camp and would not take care of her hair.  She was always wearing if back in a pony and not doing anything with it so I reluctantly agreed. I did not take her to the kids hair dresser in Greenville but to a real adult Salon.  The little girl that cut her hair had to run a thinning comb through it 3 times to thin out CJ's thickness so that her hair did not stand out straight.  The lady did a nice job on her hair, but I know that CJ was going to have to learn how to use a curling iron to get it to look as nice as the hair dresser had it looking.  So Jay went out and bought CJ her first curling iron.  She is still afraid to use it and she still has me to her curling in the morning.  I did also buy her curl spray for her to learn how to manage the curls with that as well. Everyone loved her new hair cut and said that she looked so much older.

For Memorial Day weekend we went camping as usual.  This time we took CJ's friend Millie.  She had never been camping and was very nervous about going. She came late Saturday and had a great time swimming and playing.  CJ got very badly sun burn so the next day she did not what to do much that required going out in the sun.  They made friends with some other little girls at the camp ground and played all weekend.  Jay and I just rested and did not do much of anything. Jay did sent up a ham Radio and listened to some of the broadcasts.
