September

The beginning of September was so memorable.  My Uncle stayed with us for 10 days and it was great.  He even went camping with us over labor day.  I know that my uncle wanted to do some family research and see were the Kincaids came from here in South Carolina.  So I got into contact with the people from Winnsboro museum and tried to see if they would be open.  Becuase it was labor day weekend no one was going to be around.  But I was able to get into contact with a very distant relative.  She was the Great, great, great, great granddaughter of Alexander Kincaid, Captian James Kincaid's brother. We met her for lunch and she gave us some great information about the Kincaid family before they left Scotland and went to Ireland.  She had even stayed at the Kincaid house in Scotland.  Nancy Brown was so nice and lunch was wonderful.  I took uncle John to the Old brick church and then to the Kincaid-Anderson House.  The house had just been sold and I was not able to get into contact with the new owners to see if we could look at the house.  But I went up to the house anyway and guess what Dr. Little the new owner was there working on the house.  He gave us a tour of the house and ground.  He was also originally from Ireland and had so much knowledge of Kincaid and Ireland's history.  I wish that I would have had a tape recorder to record all that he told us because by the time we get back to the campground I could not remember most of what he had told us.  The house was incredible.  He even showed us in the attic where a brick was not dry when they put it in and the person's fingerprints were still in the brick.

After touring the house Uncle John and I went to the campground.  Jay said that he just had a lot of bad luck getting the camper set up and was glad that we were back.  CJ and her friend were just having a good time playing.  Jay smoked a pork butt, so the Uncle John could see what real southern BBQ was all about.  Uncle John did not say much when he was eating and did not say if he liked it but he had 2 helpings.  We think that he really like it.

The next day we took Uncle John to Cow Pens.  One of the major battles during the Revolutionary war that Captain James Kincaid fought in.  We had been there before but had not taken a guided walking tour.  The tour was great and we found out that one of the sights of different battles that Captain Kincaid fought in and was wondered in, Eutaw Spring is now at the bottom of Lake Marion but after doing some research it looks like it not at the bottom but on the banks.  I am going to try to make it there one of these days before we leave South Carolina.
The following weekend CJ stayed home with Jay and I took Uncle John to Rome, Georgia where his grandmother and Great Grandfather lived.  It turned out that Uncle John when he was around 6 years old lived there as well and went to school there for a very short time.  We went to where his grandmother house stood, to the cemetery where she was buried, the museum where we learned that the school Uncle John, when to, was torn down sometime in the 60's. That the Cokacolda plant that Uncle John would sneak off to, to get the free sample of Cokacola was no longer there it had moved to Atlanta.  We learned some things about the Civil war and maybe why Great Great Great Grandpa John Kincaid ended up in Rome, GA.

We then left Rome and went to Cave Springs were Great Great Grandpa John Kincaid was buried.  We found that we had other relatives that were in Cave Springs. We went to the small Cave Springs Museum and then found the cemetery that John Kincaid and his first wife, the mother of his children were buried in.  We looked all over the cemetery trying to find the sights and could not, just as we were leaving we found them.  John Kincaid was buried next to his first wife which would have been my great great grandmother Henrietta Cornelia Conner Kincaid and she was buried near her mother.  Come to find out later that Henrietta Kincaid was born right here in Anderson, SC where we are living.  Her dad had moved to Cave Springs to work at the hospital.  I have a feeling that is how John and Henrietta meet.  If John was working at the hospital with Henrietta's dad, her dad may have introduced them.  This to was a fun trip.

We had never had a Hurricane that came up North this to the Upstate, but on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we were out of school because Hurricane Irma came up through Florida as far North to us.  We had a lot of wind and some people lost power.  Anderson had a lot of power outages so we were out of school.  It was nice because we got to spend a couple of extra days with Uncle John.  We spent a lot of time doing some internet research and talking.  It was fun listening to his perspective of growing up and live with my mom.  I also enjoyed hearing the stories of how he meet Montse and Debbies mom, also what he did after life in the marine corp.
The next weekend, CJ went to her American Girl doll club meeting and then I took her to her first Renaissance festival. The festival was very small and they had already ran out of most of the foods by the time we got there.  CJ enjoyed the shows and looking at all the crafts.  She liked seeing all the people in the costumes, but we did not stay very long.  CJ did get herself a belly dancing scarf.

Rosh Hashanah came and CJ and I took the day off for services and fun at the temple.  CJ sang in the Choir and did a great job with her song "Heal Us Now".  CJ ran around with her friends for her Hebrew school class.  She was so proud of herself for racing David in high heels and beating him.

That weekend we completed in a BBQ competition in Malden. He had a friend that he used to work with some help him. CJ wanted to stay with Jay and help.  We think that she just wanted to stay, so that she could play with her new friend Jilian who's dad is also a cook.  Her dad would not let her stay because 2 night before, CJ yelled at me from upstairs to come.  She had not started her bath and I got up right away and went to see what was wrong.  CJ was very calm but told me that she thought she had her first period.  I looked and she was right.  We talked about I showed her all the things that she needed and how to take care of herself.  It was more than I expected.  I forgot how much you need to know when you have your period about good hygiene and not letting the world know when you have it by hiding.  Also, no light clothes.

Jay said that everything went wrong, but he was still enjoying it.  He served peach/ apple whiskey pies to the judges.  The pies scored very bad, like at the bottom of the list. For the public, we made Oh-So-Good and served that.  The public like the Oh-So-Good and we sold out very quickly.  Saturday Jay was one of the first people in the line of the pork and was happy to have it finished.  CJ helped make the ribs novice box.  We decided that since she had so much fun doing the novice box that would be her job in other competitions. Our pork ran out quickly as well and we were happy to start cleaning up early.  Jay was worried about how he did and when our name was not called for 4th or 5th place we were sure that we did not do well, but then they called us for 3rd place.  We were so excited.  We won $1000 and went out of Dairy Queen to celebrate.  We thought that we did well in Williamston getting 5th but 3rd was amazing for our second competition.

The month ended with the high holiday of Yom Kippur.  CJ did well singing and it was funny to see her up on the bimah with everyone else tired and not having any energy because they had not eaten all day, but CJ who has not had her Bat Mitzvah could eat being a kid so she was full of energy.
